The best hitters approach each at-bat with a plan. Plate discipline, pitch selection, and situational awareness separate .600 hitters from .400 hitters.
Pitch Selection
The best pitch to hit arrives at the front of the plate at hip to mid-thigh height. Pitches at the back of the plate force you to reach. High pitches pop up. Low pitches produce ground balls. Wait for your pitch in the zone.
Plate Discipline
Even in slowpitch, walks exist. Being patient forces the pitcher to throw strikes. Take pitches early to time the arc and speed.
Situational Hitting
Nobody on base: swing for the fences. Runners on with less than two outs: adjust your approach based on what the team needs. With two outs: focus on contact, line drives up the middle.
Using the Whole Field
Practice hitting to the opposite field. Let the ball travel deeper and drive it the other way. This opens up defensive holes.
Bat Speed vs Power
Bat speed is more important than raw power. A fast swing at a large barrel generates impressive exit velocity regardless of physical size. Focus on short stride, quick hands, hip rotation.
Mental Approach
Go to the plate with a plan. Know what count to swing on. Know what pitch you are hunting. Commit.
