Tournament weekends are long, hot, and exhausting. Forgetting a key piece of equipment or running out of water at a field with no concession stand turns a fun weekend into a miserable one. This checklist covers everything a softball player and their family should pack for a tournament.
Equipment
- Bat (and a backup bat if you have one)
- Glove (broken in, not the one you just bought)
- Batting helmet with face guard if required
- Batting gloves (two pairs in case one gets wet)
- Cleats (check that they still fit before the tournament)
- Sliding shorts or compression shorts
- Knee sliders for base running
- Catcher gear if applicable (full set including chest protector, shin guards, helmet, and mitt)
Uniform and Clothing
- Full game uniform (jersey, pants, belt, socks)
- Second uniform set if your team has alternates or in case of mud
- Compression shirt or undershirt for layering
- Extra pair of socks
- Warm-up jacket or hoodie for cool mornings and between games
- Change of clothes for after the last game
- Flip flops or sandals for the car ride home
Health and Comfort
- Sunscreen SPF 30 or higher (apply before the first game and reapply between games)
- Bug spray
- Lip balm with SPF
- Sunglasses for between games
- Visor or hat for sun protection in the dugout
- Ice packs or instant cold packs for minor injuries
- First aid kit with bandages, athletic tape, and ibuprofen
- Foam roller or tennis ball for muscle soreness between games
Food and Hydration
- Large water jug or multiple water bottles (at least 64 oz total for a hot day)
- Electrolyte packets or sports drinks
- Snacks that travel well: granola bars, trail mix, fruit, peanut butter sandwiches
- A real meal packed in a cooler for between games (concession stand food is inconsistent)
- Extra ice for the cooler
Comfort and Entertainment
- Folding chair or stadium seat for parents and between games
- Pop-up canopy or shade tent (check tournament rules on tent placement)
- Blanket for sitting on grass
- Phone charger and portable battery pack
- Small fan or misting fan for extreme heat
- Card games or activities for downtime between games
Team Supplies
- Scorebook and lineup cards
- Bucket of practice balls for warmups
- First aid supplies for the team
- Team roster and emergency contact information
- Cash for gate fees, parking, and concessions
Night Before Checklist
The night before the tournament:
- Charge your phone and portable battery
- Fill and freeze water bottles
- Pack the cooler with ice, drinks, and food
- Lay out your uniform and check for missing pieces
- Confirm game times, field location, and parking details
- Set your alarm early enough for a proper breakfast and warmup
Tournament weekends test your preparation as much as your skills. Having everything you need lets you focus on playing instead of scrambling for forgotten gear. Print this list and check it off the night before every tournament until packing becomes automatic.
